A Twisted Nonlinear RPG

Game Pitch

We’ve made a detailed pitch of the game since we plan to start a crowdfinding campaign.

World Slayer is a non-linear RPG for mobile platforms, PC. (And probably more!)

The protagonist, who literally slays worlds, suddenly loses all of his (or her) power. Everything that happens afterwards is up to you, the player. Will you restore Slayer’s power and destroy the world? Or maybe you’d rather go the oldschool route, become a monarch and lead a dictatorship? Or try to find the source of the Corruption and rid the world of it, before it’s too late? Or the hell with it, maybe just live a little for once before the Corruption turns the world into a monster that devours other worlds?

Everything that happens between the setup and one of the outcomes can develop in many various ways. The player can finish the story as a typical savior, as a manipulative villain (from the point of view of the world’s inhabitants, who don’t really want to be destroyed), as a madman or a mad woman, as an elaborate strategist, or maybe a romantic hero (so long as the romances don’t distract from the world’s collapse too much… unless, there’s someone else, who can save the world?..)

Genre

World Slayer is an RPG that uses both Western (Dragon Age, Baldur’s Gate) and Eastern (Persona, Final Fantasy, Suikoden) RPG elements, developed for mobile platforms, handheld consoles and PC. We want to make the game as accessible as possible for all types of gamers.

Platforms

Our primary platforms Android and iOS. There aren’t many quality RPGs on these platforms, that aren’t ports of classic games or designed specifically for mobile experience.

We’re also making a Steam version for Windows, Linux, macOS.

And, since we’re using Unity, porting the game to handheld systems such as PS Vita is on our radar as well. It’s not new, but we still love it

Mobile RPG

We’ve decided to not go the conventional way of many mobile RPG developers, who prefer the free2play MMORPG model, but instead make a full RPG focused on these values:

  • Single player campaign, where the destiny of the world depends on the player’s decisions.
  • Replayability – every new playthrough could be a completely new story, different from the previous one. Also, finishing the first playthrough unlocks the New Game+ mode, which allows to affect the story more significantly and discover elements that were initially unavailable.
  • Ease of use – it’s simple to understand how the game works and how to get a hang of its features. Further in the game the player is presented with options of combining and improving these features in order to find the player’s unique tricks to level up and complete global actions.
  • Mobility – we consider all nuances of handheld gaming: short gaming sessions, necessity to take breaks, etc. World Slayer is perfectly playable during a daily commute, or during a meal – pretty much in any suitable situation, when a gamer wants to play.
  • Story – the narrative isn’t built on trivial claims about saving the world and cutout “chosen one” templates, instead it’s based on the characters’ interactions and non-standard storytelling decisions, which the player has to deal with. The story is presented somewhat frivolously, with humor and a bit of parody.

You’ll be able to play World Slayer practically anywhere and anytime!

We want World Slayer to give the players a new, previously unexplored gaming experience.

Here are the key features of the game:

  • Completely non-linear story, that fully depends on the freely chosen actions and decisions of the player. Cause and effect relationships are very important.
  • The relationships between the protagonist and main companions could vary from a common romance… to a global catastrophe.
  • At a certain point the Faction Rivalry mode becomes available, allowing the player to conquer cities and lands, improve the army and build defences.
  • 10 main playable companion characters and many secondary ones. Main characters behave accordingly with their beliefs or sets of rules, and thus can either join you, or become your nemesis and lead an army against you.
  • Crafting weapons, devices, and magic stones.
  • Battle system, despite being simple to learn and understand, offers a large variety of tactics.

There are many worlds out there that exist parallel to each other. An organisation called Aethernum regulates the coexistence of these worlds. It consists of the Superintendent Infinity Council, which makes the decisions, and the Executors, who follow the orders.
Occasionally a world, for an unknown reason, becomes affected by the Corruption, which gradually deforms it. The weaker people become their own dark incarnations and turn into monsters. When the Corruption reaches 200% and above, the whole world turns into a Corrupted Monster, that devours other worlds. Since it’s mostly unknown where the Corruption comes from and how to get rid of it, the world heavily affected by it becomes a subject to destruction.

The task to destroy Corrupted worlds is assigned to the Executor #7, whose role is given to the player.

But this time around the mission didn’t go according to the plan. The moment the Slayer arrives into the world, he is immediately attacked by a mysterious sorceress, who somehow, with a single spell, drains all of the Slayer’s power (and degrades him or her from level 99 to 1), but also loses all of her own memory.

However, losing power doesn’t cancel the task – something needs to be done, otherwise the world turns into a Monster, or Aethernum sends another Executor with the same mission.
At the beginning of each new playthrough the gender of the protagonist can be selected by the player. The gender affects plot twists, available romances, and allows to use either devices (male), or magic (female).

Decision Cards

When there is an important choice to be made, the player is presented with the selection of Decision Cards, available in a given situation. They also constitute reply options in a dialogue.

There are 6 major cards, each with its own meanings. Typically, large portion of Decisions is related to one of these cards.

Kindness/Agreement/Morality/Optimism

Green card means something good, kind, positive.

Also could be used to provide help, heal, or simply agree with something.

Good act (towards another character), altruism.

Aggression/Riot/Disagreement/Evil

Red card is the opposite of the green one, and means a bad act (towards another character), aggression, riot, disagreement with something.

In some situations could be used to attack other characters, sometimes offend them, or simply refuse them. And not in a polite way.

Cunning/Seduction/Lie/Manipulation

Blue card usually stands for manipulations with information, charm and oratory.

Decisions of this card are about flirting, tricking, using charm, deception, and cunning.

Item/Money/Give/Take

Yellow card represents material values, and is regularly required to use a certain item or money.

Could mean giving/taking an item, spending money, buying something from an NPC (information, for example), and more.

Mind/Intelligence/Analysis

Cyan card means Decisions related to the brain functions – logic, analytics, erudition, etc.

These are always informed and thought-out decisions, that lack any kind of emotional attachment.

Madness/Sarcasm/Spontaneity

Violet card is the opposite of the cyan card in a way, and means madness, rash decisions, and sometimes sarcasm or simply spontaneous actions, ineffective from the rational point.

Madness is a particularly dangerous card in the world, full of the Corruption, because the Corruption itself is chaotic and unpredictable.

In this section we will briefly explain how things work in the game.

World map is the primary way to travel between cities. The enemies and events are marked on the map with their respected symbols – some of them are just moving around the map, some would try to chase the player, and some would try to get away.

There are no classic random encounters, when an enemy attacks out of nowhere. You can always see if someone is trying to attack you, and it’s possible to avoid an enemy, before they catch up with you.

However, there is no way of telling what kind of enemy is attacking. Also, you can’t know beforehand what happens at the events on the map. In a way there is an element of mystery to it.

Locations and cities, which you can enter from the map, are presented with a 2D background, a portrait list of the NPCs who are currently present at the location, and a list of actions that are currently available.

Battle system borrows from the classic JRPG mechanics, in which the characters exchange strikes and attacks – there are many tactical approaches to it. For example, instead of defeating a character by repetitively striking them, you can first damage their strength, so they won’t be able to even lift the sword.

Factions Rivalry mode is a separate mode, in which the player leads an army, increases its numbers and improves its equipment. You select the region (from the ones available for invasion), and then choose which actions to apply to that area.

EQUIPMENT

You can buy, take away from your enemies, or craft weapons, devices and magic. The equipment upgrades with usage and receives new qualities, attacks and moves. By the rules of the game’s world there are no characters who can use both devices and magic at the same time – it’s either one or another.

Basic attacks and moves depend on the weapon. Sometimes a weapon can use its own magic attacks, but normally primary weapons are focused on dealing damage.

Devices are more common, and can be used practically by anyone (except for mages). The in-game market offers a large variety of devices, the purpose of which ranges from dealing damage, controlling the situation on a battlefield, healing, weakening enemies, and more. Devices are produced by large manufacturers (corporations), each designing devices of a particular type.

Magic is a bit more rare. Why is that so? Well, science hasn’t figured out just yet. But if someone is predisposed to use magic, they will never be able to use devices. Magic is presented with various magic crystals that store the information about spells. Each crystal typically has a narrow use case – for example, stone of ice, stone of speed, and others.

ABILITIES

The abilities are fully independent from the equipment. Each character has unique abilities, as well as unique ways of unlocking them.

For example, the World Slayer acquires new skills via upgrades, and they depend on the Decision cards. Some skills of the companions require special Masters, some unlock with the story progression, and some are only available as a result of a relationship with the protagonist (friendship, romance, etc.).

LEVELING UP

With each new level Slayer gains 1 point of Resolve Points, which can be used to acquire a perk. Perks are organized by Decision cards in the level up menu. Each perk can provide a passive bonus, as well as a new ability.

The world (which you are tasked to destroy) consists of regions that differ by climate, architecture, and belief systems. One kind of behavior could be encouraged in one area, but judged in another one.

In the universe of World Slayer fantasy blends with technology, and other elements are reminiscent of our modern world. For example, healing and power up potions are manufactured by corporations and distributed in metal cans with bright labels on them. Different device companies compete with each by improving their technologies, and sometimes even stealing or copying one from another.

FRACTIONS

By the time Slayer arrives, the factions of the world are already at a feud, in which they fight for their beliefs, values, resources, or they simply try to survive.

Briefly about the major factions:

Alliance of the Inevitable Bliss (AIB)

This odd name is used by the strongest faction, or rather an alliance of three factions: Bliss Corporation, led by the president Nina Lazarus, the richest and the most influential company, that promises to build Inevitable Bliss, a system where everything is happy. Just how exactly this is going to be executed is unknown, but for the sake of everyone’s Bliss the corporation will bribe, manipulate consciousness, murder, or even start a war with anyone, who doesn’t want Bliss.

The Alliance also includes the Ward of Heroes and the Ward of Lords. Money, knights and soldiers unite into a powerful authority, that can’t be dismissed.

Ward of Heroes

A militarized organization, funded by the Bliss Corporation, technically independent, but factually directly reliant upon their investors. The Heroes wear uniforms and mostly use ballistic weapons. Part of the Alliance of the Inevitable Bliss.

Ward of Lords

At some point Valor kingdom ruled most of the continent, but their king has been killed, and the majority of the Order has been destroyed by Lia Nao’s father’s army. Left ungoverned and resourceless, they joined up with the Alliance of the Inevitable Bliss as a knighthood Order by the name Ward of Lords.

Order of the Wise

An independent organization, consisting exclusively of mages, that studies magic and controls the balance… whatever that means. The Order runs stern discipline with a clear distaste for technology, considering it a “false way of development” of the humankind.

High Tech Research Institute – HTRI

A place called High Tech Research Institute is in fact a cyber city full of scientists, or rather a giant lab. And the locals, despite walking around in nerdy robes, are protected by robo-devices – a high tech weaponry. Many innovative devices are produced right here.

SteamPirates

A small independent faction, where freedom prevails over other values, the kind of freedom that the current authority does not provide. They steal technology to defend the freedom of anyone oppressed, who wishes to join them.

The Kingdom of Marshmallow

A highly populated kingdom with a silly name is actually quite threatening, because it is ruled by a tyrant princess Lia Nao, whom many consider a real demon. Stories about her and her army, told by a few lucky survivors, are full of horror and suffering.

There are many characters in the game, so we’ll only introduce the main ones.

Name: Executer #7 (also known as Slayer)

Class: World Slayer

The protagonist, could be either male or  female (the choice affects available romances and the story overall).

Executor #7, level 99 hero, got the nickname for succeeding at the world destruction job more than anyone.

But right after arriving to the next mission was drained of all powers, and became a level 1 noob.

The behavior of this character depends directly on the actions of the player.

Name: Thea (real name is unknown)

Class: Amnesic Sorceress

Weapon: Pure Magic

That mysterious sorceress who drained Slayer of all strength. Along with that, probably because of the power of the spell, she lost her memory. Or maybe she just hit her head so hard, that she forgot not only what happened, but also how to behave herself appropriately without making everyone think that she’s a naive tool.

For example, she has no idea why people are so attentive to her outfit. Doesn’t understand sarcasm. Or context. Pure innocent soul. Or just a naive tool.

Name: Rin Breaker

Class: Pirate Boss

Weapon: Revolver

By looking at this girl you’d never think that she’s the boss of SteamPirates, a young faction whose major interest is freedom. And, well, let’s be honest, stealing technology from the rich to defend the poor.

Rin is always optimistic, determined and practically shines a light, which motivates everyone to follow her.

Lost her hand in a battle and replaced it with a mechanical one.

Name: Phil ‘ASDF’

Class: Heartless Hacker

Weapon: Flaming Heart

Legendary hacker (who clearly didn’t bother much with his nickname), certainly loves technology more than people. Over half of his body is replaced with implants, including his heart, which now supplies a powerful cannon in the middle of his chest. “A proper shot should come from the heart” – Phil comments on this odd augmentation. Phil doesn’t show any emotions, which doesn’t stop him from being extremely cynical or from trolling other people.

Name: Jackie Strike (Jackhammer)

Class: Raging Fighter

Weapon: E-Knuckles

Jackie (who prefers to be called Jack, short for Jackhammer) lives to fight, whether in a ring, where she has become a champion multiple times, or in life, where she defends herself from anyone who wishes evil upon her. And many people do wish, since Jackie is very straightforward and always speaks her mind. Turns out, not everyone likes to hear truth about them.

Name: Yoshime Tsukimori

Class: Silent Protector

Weapon: Spear

Most people call him the Legendary Spearman for inhuman skills with spears and fearlessness in fight. But those who know him a little more usually call him a “legendary downer”. Simply because he spent all his life practicing and bettering himself as a warrior, while forgetting to better himself as a person. Yoshime is not very partial to modern civilization, but the spirit of old times, traditions and rituals is strong within him.

Name: Elza Valcorice

Class:Gifted Neuro-Bitch

Weapon: Neuro Devices

A spoiled aristocrat, a heir to a large corporation, a bitch and a psychopath… also a genius engineer of neuro devices, a special type of tech, that runs on neural impulses supplied by human body.

Has connections both in the highest circles, and in the underground criminal world.

Loves doing everything inappropriate: abuses alcohol, exploits men, brags about herself, ignores the law and engages in unethical activities.

Name: Wilhelm Steinkraft

Class:Renegade Madmage

Weapon: Flask of Desperation

Wilhelm used to be a scientist-mage with high potential, who contributed a lot to the development of magic and the Order. But the scientist in him became deranged, and got him involved in forbidden magic. Some say he even began kidnapping people and using them as lab rats for his bloody experiments…

Whatever the case is, Wilhelm was expelled from the Order and proclaimed a renegade, with a hefty reward for his head. Although, no one really managed catch him. And many tried.

It can’t be ruled out that forbidden magic made Wilhelm a madman. A powerful, dangerous madman.

Name: Lia Nao

Class: Berserker Princess

Weapon: Double Razors

Chances are, when you hear about a ruthless tyrant who destroys hundreds of enemies in mere minutes, you imagine exactly this face… No? Well, in this case meet Lia Nao, Berserker Princess, a combination of a proper child and a bloodthirsty murderer.

Princess Nao is always accompanied by Mao, a sorcerer cat, who compensates her lack of any magical or technological abilities.

But if Lia Nao is really all that horrible, as her enemies say, then why is she praised by everyone led by her?

Uniting all these characters into the team in one playthrough is not going to work – their belief systems, interests and goals are far too different.

The game is ~60% complete!.. But it’s well known that the last steps are usually the most difficult, and we need your help!

We need funds to:

  • Improve battle locations and the world map. Making locations more interesting and detailed requires more 3D models and textures.
  • Make complete portraits of all battle characters, not just the main ones. At this point the portraits of NPCs and regular soldiers are simplified.
  • Additional animations and effects. More visual effects, more character animations, and more improvements to the existing ones. We’d also like to add more cool attacks and spells to the game.
  • New Corrupted bosses. These are unique monsters spawned by the Corruption. Fighting them is especially challenging and entertaining, so we’d like to make more of these creatures.
  • Sound and Music. Making the game the way we’d like to see it (and you – to enjoy it) requires more sounds for attacks, magic spells, visual effects, etc., as well as more music tracks, both instrumental and with vocals.
